Review: The Hype about Microsoft's BlueTrack 8.21.2010

A cost effective alternative to expensive laser mice is now widely available to pc users from Microsoft. Dubbed BlueTrack, this new technology allows a mouse to better operate on numerous surfaces in many cases outperforming laser models. Check out the review of Microsoft's Mobile Mouse 6,000 BlueTrack device. High sensitivity, super resolution, and smooth operation... the laser alternative from Microsoft - BlueTrack.

Microsoft is obviously a leading name in the computer world boasting the most widely used operating system amongst pc users. BlueTrack is a technology (developed by MS) that uses blue light specular mirror optics with an embedded proprietary complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) to process calculations and enhance resolution. The blue light has a wider beam width so it can capture larger surface areas vs. laser devices. In plain English, BlueTrack can operate more precisely and on more surfaces than conventional laser mice. We found a few BlueTrack models between $40-69 (Walmart $39), available from most major retailers. If you searched the web, you could probably find these even cheaper.

The Good
The BlueTrack Mobile 6,000 performs well on almost any surface including mouse pads, wood, floors, marble, glass, and even animal fur! The optical resolution will allow for more precise measurement of mouse movement which in turn shows up as smoother moves and more accuracy. Something to also boast about is the small size of the USB interface that plugs into a single USB slot on your computer. After plugging in the interface, you will probably not be able to see it as it almost rests flush with the side of your computer. This is a plus because other models have a somewhat bulky wireless transmitter/receiver module. One other plus is the green LED on top of the mouse will turn red if the battery power becomes too low for operation. Change the batteries as soon as this happens!

Since this is a MS product, Windows will often automatically detect and install all necessary drivers so you are ready to use this mouse. We recommend using the install CD that comes with the device because it installs sensitivity software exclusive to the BlueTrack product line from Microsoft. You can then fine tune your device to your liking (scrolling, function buttons, etc). Testing on Windows XP and Windows 7 without any issues, plug and play, we found no problems.

The Bad
This mouse eats batteries quickly. If you use your computer frequently every day of the week, expect to change the batteries at least once per week if not sooner. You may want to purchase rechargeable batteries which may last longer and obviously you can reuse. Otherwise, expect to go thru AA batteries left and right. The Microsoft website describes the battery life as 8 months per battery. However, this is rare and probably not exactly practical for average users. Expect shorter battery life for the time being (unless using higher capacity battery cells).

Overall Consumer Experience
Microsoft's BlueTrack 2.4 GHz wireless mouse technology is a great alternative to laser mice if you want something that will operate smoothly on multiple surfaces for half the price. From a consumer standpoint, unless you can find a sub $30 dollar wireless laser mouse small in size, consider the BlueTrack product line as worth the purchase. Make sure you have lots of AA and AAA batteries at the ready or use rechargeable high capacity batteries. This mouse also works for Mac users. You will enjoy the functionality and accuracy of MS BlueTrack especially if you are a gamer, involved with graphics, video, or heavy web surfing. It's ability to operate on a outstanding variety of surfaces sets it apart from the competition as well.

scarab
This is actually a pretty cool idea from RadioShack. Under $10 dollars each, these micro robots have sensors that will aide them around obstacles. You can get them in different colors and they are powered by a small replaceable battery. Recommended for ages 8 and up available in multiple colors. Watch out because these could also scare people with their moving legs! Stop by your local store to see the other creatures they have.

ups
Nearly every home has a computer or electronics, so why not protect them? One of the best investments you can make is to get a UPS system.
