Aiptek Action HD Review: Shuttle Atlantis Launch 5.14.2010

Review update: Watch the space shuttle Atlantis launch in high definition with this review of the Aiptek Action HD video camera. The space shuttle Atlantis launched at 220pm eastern May 14, 2010. This video was added at a later date to show the Aiptek in motion as a video upload to Youtube. Check out this awesome picture in picture coverage of the space shuttle launch. While it is in high definition, it's too bad this camcorder didn't offer digital image stabilization. See for yourself!

Get flash player to play to this file Updated video: This video from the Aiptek Action HD model was shot in 720p at 60 frames per second (the maximum fps this camcorder offers). See how this video camera looks for yourself. Notice that some colors are not replicated well and the picture is jump due to the lack of electronic stabilization.

Update: The space shuttle Atlantis launched at 220pm eastern time on May 14, 2010 titled STS132 on its final mission. Congress could however extend the shuttle program past its current life cycle either this year or in 2011. If congress does not extend the program, the current fleet will be retired. This video was filmed in high definition from central Florida.

The Aiptek HD video camera or camcorder offers high definition recording in a small package. Because of its size it gets an automatic plus, however it also lacks some basic functionality that more seasoned camcorder owners may notice. There are two models of this particular camcorder - the Action HD and HD+ which offers video stabilization. Since the Action HD lacks this, its video appears very shaky and difficult to watch. Viewers might also notice streaks in the video file on playback. Some of the lower end camcorders have this problem and it's likely related to firmware or overall hardware of the recording circuitry. Higher end camcorders overcome all of this with better designs, lenses, and electronic stabilization abilities.

Most of the new camcorders similar to this one offer still picture capturing. Lens: 3x Optical Zoom lens (7.5mm ~ 21.5mm, F 3.6 ~ 6.7). Still Image: 3200 x 2400 Pixels (8 Mega Pixel), 2560 x 1920 Pixels (5 Mega Pixel), 2048 x 1536 Pixels (3 Mega Pixel). Movie Mode: 1440 x 1080 Pixels (H.264) up to 30 fps, 1280 x 720 Pixels (H.264) up to 60 fps, 720 x 480 Pixels (D1) up to 60 fps, 352 x 240 Pixels (CIF) up to 30 fps. This camera is no exception although its primary function is to record video. While some of these specifications look great, it has major issues as far as video recording goes. Users will often find they need to load codecs or special software on their PC's because this video camera records in MOV format with special encoding that requires you to load software or codecs. Some users may find that the files created by this camcorder simply cannot be played on their PC - a major disappointment. For any camcorder, it should be plug and play, especially for a camera that records to flash/removable media.

The video itself often appears jumpy and shaky with break or sync points showing up at random intervals. For this very reason this camera is to be avoided for anything serious like a wedding or family moment you want to capture if quality of video is of any concern to you. Even more disappointing is the battery life which is below average out of the two models tested here. Overall this is a disappointing camera that is probably most suited for amateur use or as a toy for your child (Christmas present). If you leave it turned off all night even with a full charge, don't expect it to turn on the next day when you want to use it!

This is actually a pretty cool idea from RadioShack. Under $10 dollars each, these micro robots have sensors that will aide them around obstacles. You can get them in different colors and they are powered by a small replaceable battery. Recommended for ages 8 and up available in multiple colors. Watch out because these could also scare people with their moving legs! Stop by your local store to see the other creatures they have.
QUICK TECH TIPS: FOR HOME & WORK
ups
Nearly every home has a computer or electronics, so why not protect them? One of the best investments you can make is to get a UPS system.
